Work and lounge zones — comfortable, representative, and ready for everyday use.

Designing a healthcare environment means balancing several essential requirements: hygiene, durability, comfort, and the psychology of space. The Orto Poul orthopaedic practice in Brno shows that these demands do not have to conflict.
The project was designed by architect Marie Kleinová, who worked on the furnishing of the consultation rooms, waiting areas, and staff facilities. The result is an environment that withstands everyday use while feeling calm and natural.

An orthopaedic practice works with a highly diverse group of patients. This had a major impact on the design.
“The specific requirements were related to the wide range of clients using the chairs and armchairs – from the youngest children to adults with limited mobility,” explains Marie Kleinová.
This defined the key parameters: stability, safety, easy maintenance, and sufficient comfort, even during longer periods of sitting.

In healthcare environments, the focus on disinfection and material durability is essential. However, this project shows that it does not have to result in a sterile interior.
“The primary requirements were quality and the possibility of disinfecting the furniture. At the same time, we were looking for a subtle design that would complement the entire interior,” adds the architect.
The colour scheme therefore works with soft shades of blue – lighter tones in the consultation rooms and reception area, and darker ones in the waiting areas, where they better withstand everyday use.
The same approach was applied to durable plastic shells used for seating in waiting zones and the staff room, where this choice makes cleaning and disinfection easier.

The project included several functionally different zones – from doctors’ workstations, taking into account different types of seating, from classic desk work to dynamic sitting on a balance stool, through waiting areas and visitor seating, to the reception and staff room.
The selection of RIM products made it possible to maintain a consistent visual language throughout the entire space while responding to the needs of both staff and patients.
“RIM offered exactly what we needed – in colours that suited the interior, and in a quality capable of withstanding demanding use in waiting areas and consultation rooms,” summarises Kleinová.
The collaboration process itself also played an important role – from the first contact to the final selection. “The willingness to explain individual functions, demonstrate chair adjustments, and provide a personal approach made the whole process a very pleasant experience,” says the architect.

The Orto Poul project confirms that good healthcare interior design is not only about meeting technical requirements. It is equally important that the environment works in the long term – for both staff and patients. The combination of ergonomics, durable materials, and thoughtful design creates a space that is not only functional, but also welcoming to employees and patients.
